A group of some of Indiana’s finest musicians, along with the Indiana Poet Laureate, will pay tribute to BOB DYLAN at 7:30 (doors open at 6:30) on Jan. 9, 2010 at the Athenaeum Theatre, formerly known as the American Cabaret Theatre: Jennie Devoe-- whose sound mixes folk blues and rock with soul-tinged vocals, Gordon Bonham-- one of the state’s premier bluesmen, Jason Wilber-- of the John Prine Band, Tim Grimm-- noted actor and award-winning singer-songwriter, and Bobbie Jane Lancaster, the versatile Bloomington Americana singer-songwriter, together with Indiana Poet Laureate, Norbert Krapf, who will recite Dylan-related poems with backing by Gordon Bonham and Tim Grimm. Also performing will be The White Lighting Boys, a hillbilly/bluegrass roots band from Brown County, and Joyous Garde, a young rock group from Columbus. Tim Grimm conceived of this show and produced two wildly successful Hoosier Dylan Concerts in November, 2008 and one in January, 2009. The Royal Theater in Danville was a sell-out, The Crump Theater show helped maintain the momentum of revitalizing that Columbus venue, and the Ricks Theatre show brought winter life to Greenfield. In Sept., 2009 the HD show at The Buskirk-Chumley in Bloomington drew its largest numbers and got rave reviews. “I’ve gotten more positive feedback about the Hoosier Dylan shows than anything I’ve been a part of musically,” says Tim Grimm. People have described it as one of the best concerts they’ve ever seen. It is certainly the best dollar value you will find anywhere.” Dylan’s vast music catalogue allows for an entire show of his songs to be played by different types of artists—from folk, country, bluegrass to rock and blues. “He’s probably the greatest lyricist of the twentieth-century,” Grimm says. “He transcends so many generations and has served as a model for all singer-songwriters who have followed. He was the first folk musician to go electric, and the first successful writer of political and social commentary on a mass scale.” The night of Dylan music will be reminiscent of the Rolling Thunder Revue tour. Led by Dylan in the mid-1970’s, busloads of artists, including Joan Baez and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, would travel the East Coast and other regions to play old theaters. Noted poets such as Allen Ginsberg would also be on hand, and following that tradition, Hoosier Dylan will include Indiana Poet Laureate Norbert Krapf, who will recite Dylan-related poems with musical backing.
